A new commission for Milliner Thirzie Hull, I am designing illustrations for her website, these are just preliminary sketches. Her hats are beautiful and have animal themes running through so when i begin adding colour i want to convey something of this. Its great to be doing another interesting and creative commission, juggling it with the personal project though will take some impressive dexterity and organisation!

Ive managed to persuade the printmaker Julia Manning to take me on as a apprentice this Easter. We've been working through some amazing 5 or 6 layered colour woodblocks, they are so complicated and so eye opening! Today we were mixing up oils and grinding pigments ourselves and I'm learning tricks with registration and editioning. Next week im going with her to the London Original Print fair, she's exhibiting there along with the rest of the best in printmaking, im so excited!

Chicken Drypoint etching

Theo came back from Madrid with a really beautiful drypoint etching of a wild garden. It inspired me to try it out. It's really hard work scratching into the surface of the plate but i think its worth it, i love how the lines are thick and black like charcoal. This is an old plate that i found in the scrap pile so thats what the writting on the side is about, i enjoy reusing old plates that have been scratched up and bashed about, it gives them abit more texture.

Two etching plates, the man is a fiddler from gadja dilo and the woman from a modern travler article. They are both the same size, made on steel. Id like to slowly build up a few more similar characters, to sit along side each other in a series.

I made this at the Princes Drawing school, they have free etching classes on a monday night and on the first session you get a free copper plate. It was really nice to explore a new studio and they have an aquatint gun which makes aquatint so much more simple!

Beautiful etchings from Kiki Smith, everything she creates never ceases to impress me. i love these for their delicacy and technical skill. She is one of my favorite artists by far, an amazing inspiration!

I found these of Harlan&Weaver press, a studio in america with lots of other brilliant artists on their books including louise bourgeois.

Thinking about our up and coming shop project a lot recently.. about what i want to do and who i might work with well. Its a daunting task.

the idea of pop up shops sounds really exciting to me, like those pop up gallery's that were sweeping london last year. Also thinking about merchandising and those aspects of our practice. the constant reminding that we must be commercial. Looking at yellow owl for there beautiful print products and particularly like these papers, envelopes and pens they've created as little sets, really nice.

Perhaps an idea would be to look at the royal mail and the loss of letter writing in the modern day and maybe get people to write out letters or draw pictures to send their friends during the exhibition with dressed up postmen walking around the room... maybe its not that original but it could make for a fun interactive environment. rambling.

For this Macmillan Competition I'm thinking of a story about a Cheeky little Chicken called Tikka, who just doesn't know how to cluck. She's confused about where she stands in life and doesn't know whether she's a cat, dog or human..

Maybe she could try and catch a ball and try and eat tuna.. and attempt using a toilet but then realise she can lay an egg instead... still needs some work.

Macmillan childrens book competition

Brian Wildsmith is definitely one of my favorite illustrators; his ability to get so many colours onto the page is incredible, layer upon layer of bright brilliant colour! And the creative way he uses the page with unexpected composition and playful creatures. Hes just great!

I went down to ceramics the other day and my lovely friend helped me make up some tiles, getting the glaze right is really hard, the colours are so different once their fired and alot of the detail is lost because of the layering. Im really happy with them though, there is a speckled effect on them like egg shells and i like their lightness. hopefully i'll get a chance to do more... its great to have good friends in good places!

I found a really nice cook book in brixton wholefoods store, its made up of different recipes from mothers of children in a playgroup, lots of really nice hand tappered meals to make with kids. The illustrations are a mixture of woodblock and ink drawn, really simple and the whole books in one colour of ink. Its made me regret the choice of watercolour.. finding somewhere to print these properly is going to be a nightmare!

We have to design and print a publication in 4 weeks, the minimum number of editions is 10.

i have decided to make a cheap recipe book with an aim to provide frugal recipes for healthy food that's not just beans on toast and also not got the pretension of Hugh Fearnly Whittingstal. The audience is students and foodies with a budget, those wanting to save and learn new tricks. It will be vegetarian and alot of the book should focus on beans and pulses as a really cheap source of protein. Im going to collect the recipes from friends and family and have some of my own that ive collected along the way...

in my house we seem to have a pretty large library of cook books..

Hurray~Huraah ive just sold a wood carving i made last year, a Happy £250 in the bank!!!

Me, my boyfriend and mate Tommy have set up a printing studio in a disused chapel, we stocked up on inks rollers and burnishers from Intagllio print makers by borough market. (which by the way is an absolutly brilliant shop, they sell everything you could possibly want for printing) We've got soo much space and its pretty nice to being able to listen to your own music, smoke and drink whilst working. So im hoping for a productive summer!

I liked the wasp factory when i read it befor and although its popular moby dick tempted me, but i think im gona go with Daniel Defos "journal of a plague year" its relevant for me spending my summer in london, plus there havnt been that many covers designed for it. Im looking forward to this project, it seems really good, just simply working on draughtsmanship rather than having to second guess and plan whilst drawing, is going to be refreshing.
